We were incorporated in 1990, but our experience in the coal business extends back 3 decades. Chris and Maria Hohwald started a company in 1977, selling boxed canal coal to large chain stores. At that time, they had an office in Lake Ronkonkoma, which was receiving a large amount of calls from homeowners for anthracite coal. They started doing residential deliveries in all of Nassau and Suffolk counties and Welsch Coal Company was born!

During the mid 80's, Long Islanders learned of a quality anthracite coal called Bethlehem Coal. This nickname came about because Bethlehem Steel Co. owned and operated a mine in South Tamockwa, PA, Leheigh Coal and Navigation. This coal was simply awesome. We were a distributor for this mine on Long Island. By word of mouth, our greatest source of success, lead to our current name. One person would tell another and would say "if you want Bethlehem Coal, call them". Often a first-time customer would ask, "Is this Bethlehem Coal Company?"

Chris then got the idea of asking the mine if they would object to us incorporating the Bethlehem Coal Company name. They loved the idea. In 1990, Bethlehem Coal Company Inc., was born and here to stay. As of the 2007-2008 heating season, the company is in its 2nd generation. Chris and Maria's son Ron, and his wife Linda, will be taking care of your coal and wood pellet needs.

During our 30 years in the retail coal business, we have purchased many other coal companies. Some of the companies include Capital Coal-East Northport, Coalrite-Levittown, Shirley Coal-Shirley, Bellmore Coal, Suffolk Coal and Frank Brothers-Bay Shore to name a few!
